The sky is falling!

Photographing a Canada Goose can get very mundane for a wildlife photographer. By the end of Spring the abundant numbers of these large and vocal birds make photography less than challenging. We can however not resist the temptation as we get excited to see them arrive early Spring year after year. Although I try hard not to publish too many photos of Canada Geese, I found this one way too amusing to keep for myself.

I observed her on her nest staring into the heavens with what seemed to be a look of worry. The Chicken Little story, claiming the Sky is falling, immediately came to mind. When I proofed my photos the result was better than I had expected. I quickly searched for the phrase “The Sky is Falling” and found plenty of renditions of the old fable including a little fact I had not known. The Story of Chicken Little, A.K.A. Henny Penny, A.K.A. Chicken Licken as featured in a 1943 Disney Cartoon is a little disturbing compared to the modern day computer animated Disney Feature. In 1943 Foxy Loxy cunningly uses a number of psychological tricks to lure the farm animals into a cave and eat them all.

Fox Lox opened the door, and in went Turkey
Lurkey. As she went in, Fox Lox bit off her
head, threw it one way, and the body another.
Then went in Goose Loose. Fox Lox cut off her
head, and threw her in. Then came Duck Luck.
Fox Lox did the same by her. Then came Hen
Pen. Fox Lox bit off her head, and threw it one
way, and the body the other. Then came Chicken
Little. Fox Lox caught hold of her, and eat her
all up, and then finished his supper with the rest,
and all this from the foolish fright of Chicken
Little.
